 What to look out for

 1.  Meat by-products or poultry by-products.

 2.  Added Sweeteners.

 3.  Artificial Preservatives (BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin).   Natural preservatives such as tocopherols,

Vitamin C and Rosemary Extract can be used instead.   It should be noted that natural preservatives

do not preserve the food as long as artificial preservatives so owners should always check the “best by”

date on the label and look for relatively fresh products.

4.  Artificial Colors.  The color of the food makes no difference to the dog.  These nutritionally useless

chemicals are used to make them look appealing to you!

Remember, a diet made with fresh, whole, species-appropriate ingredients (think animal proteins rather than plant proteins) is far healthier than one made with cheap fats, inexpensive carbohydrates and plant proteins such as corn gluten meal.

NUTRITION

By now you have surely heard about by-products in pet foods.  You know that pet food is not regulated the same way human food is and things like eyeballs, intestines, feet, beaks, feathers, euthanized cattle, pigs, cats and dogs, etc. are allowed to be in pet foods.

These types of pet foods contribute to poor overall health of your pet including obesity, dental problems and skin and coat issues, just to name a few.

When you feed your dog premium dog food and/or holistic foods, your dog’s health will improve including food allergies and skin conditions.  Some experts believe the risk of certain cancers can decrease with premium dog food and vitamin supplements.

What you can do

First and foremost, look at the ingredients of the dog food you are considering buying for your dog.  Look for the following “Hallmarks of quality”:

 a. Animal protein at the top of the ingredient list.

 b. A Named animal protein source (i.e chicken,

beef, lamb) should be at the top of the list.  If it says “meat” it’s a low quality protein source of dubious origin.

 c. Animal protein meals (i.e. chicken meal) should also be from named species. If it says poultry meal, it’s not good!

 d. Whole vegetables, fruits and grains.   These contain wholesome nutrients with their fragile vitamins, enzymes and antioxidants intact.
