Rudy has been with us, his "temporary foster home" for a few days and has been a well behaved, unexpected guest. He is very attentive, responds to basic commands like sit, stay, come and he listens well to basic communication. So far he has barked to alert us if he needs to go out for potty breaks and has had no accidents in the house. He shows good all around household manners.

He will need someone to teach him the rules, boundaries and expectations of his new home. There is a great dog in him, wanting to please his human guardian, but he can't learn it on his own.  He is getting along well with our resident male & female boxers. Our female was a little obsessed with him, following him around and trying to dominate. Rudy was very mellow and didn't seem to care. He isn't used to their rough play yet, but is warming up to some play. He has shown our female only a spin away and small vocalizations when she tries to dominate him.

We have not seen any signs of aggression with us or the dogs, but he has already become a little protective of us and the home barking at people that go by the house. he stops immediately when instructed to. I do not believe it is display of fearful aggression at all. I think it's a bold, confident alert vocalization to outsiders.

Rudy saw and cornered a hedgehog in the yard. He was very curious about it, but didn't do anything to it. Of course, the hedgehog didn't want anything to do with him, so I called him off and he backed away when called. He and I were in the garage with the doors open, watching a thunderstorm pass, when a duck and her ducklings cut across the yard. We were surprised, and they were very surprised. But, he just sat and watched them go by, no barking or chasing. I think he might do okay in a home with a cat because he doesn't show any prey aggression.

He has been sleeping in a separate room at night, with access to a crate or free roam in the room. He sleeps or is at least quiet through the night. He seems very happy to see us when we check on him in the morning.
Rudy is a sweet, gentle boy with lots of love to give.  And I think he has a strong desire to be with an affectionate family. When he wants you to pet him he sits nicely beside you and puts his paw on your leg and looks at you with those eyes!
Unfortunately, his unexpected arrival hasn't allowed us to walk him much. He is just okay on leash. He likes to pull, but responds to verbal corrections when he does it. Spending some individual time walking around the neighborhood will be our next priority.

Meet Rudy!  What a face on this boy!!  Rudy is a 4 year old male coming into the program from a Shelter in CT, where he was dropped off by his home.  We do not know much about him and are looking  for a foster home to work with us to get to know this boy a little better.   He is in a temporary foster home at that moment and from what we have found, he seems to be a great boy, maybe needs to be socialized a little more,.  He would also benefit from a savvy owner to help work with him on training in general and to help with any behaviors that might arise.  Rudy has no history will children, so we will not be placing him in a home with smaller children ( under 16).  If you are interested in fostering and getting to know this boy, please email foster@theboxerrescue.org
