Spencer, who we now call Taylor, has completely blended himself into our household. It’s amazing how he already seems to understand our schedule and he does what he’s supposed to do, when he’s supposed to do it.  He and his boxer-sister Callaway have a very nice relationship.  He has more energy than she does, being 2-1/2 years younger but she just walks away and he accepts that. He follows her lead and she’s happy to show him the ropes.

We have worked very hard on the basic commands and he’s really getting good.  He’s eager to learn but is still easily distracted.  We just started our 6-week training session and so far, he loves learning but he especially loves the treats and the other dogs.  His leash walking has always been polite and continues to be that way even though he has a partner now.  We introduced toys between the two dogs last week and they play very nicely together.  Neither of them seems to mind whether they are the one ‘with’ the toy or the one ‘chasing’ the toy.  Both positions for them seem fun.

In the beginning, he was not sleeping through the night, but that’s changed.  He waits for the alarm to go off in the morning before getting up.  He hasn’t figured out that I like to snooze it for 5 minutes, but hopefully he will eventually figure it out.  That extra 5 minutes is like heaven!

We left him out of the crate for an hour a couple of times when we left the house.  Because he did so well, we attempted to try it for longer periods.  He’s been out of the crate completely all week and seems to enjoy relaxing around the house.  No accidents in the house and he hasn’t gotten into anything he shouldn’t.   When we return home, he’s almost always in his crate sleeping with the door wide open.

We are looking forward to our first camping trip with him this weekend.  I’m sure he’ll do fine in the camper and I know he’ll love that we take about 10 walks each day!

Taylor is such a great dog and I am so thankful that such a caring organization like the Boxer Rescue exists.  Eliminating this dog would have been an amazing loss!

Taylor can stay with us as long as he’s still breathing and we will do our best to give him a comfortable, safe and loving home.

Spencer is adjusting very well here in his foster home.  He and his foster boxer-sister are getting along great.  It’s hard to believe that they just met less than a week ago.   Although we are feeding them separately, we do treat them together during training and neither one of them seems food aggressive.  We are keeping toys out of the equation for a little bit longer so as to steer clear of any trouble.  We will slowly introduce toys in a week or two.

Spencer walks great on leash and doesn’t try to pull much at all.  He tires easily when walking however which could be the heat or possibly that he’s not used to longer walks. In either case, we are adjusting him to our usual two long walks each day.

He is still not sleeping through the night but he’s giving us another hour of peace each night… eventually, he’ll catch up to our schedule.  The first few nights sleeping we closed his crate door but last night attempted to keep the door open, as we believe that’s what he was used to.  He seemed more comfortable and didn’t get into trouble (especially since he was in our bedroom with the door closed).  Hopefully he will continue to deserve that privilege.   His appetite is improving now and we will hopefully see a couple more pounds on him over the next few weeks.  We have all fallen in love with him!

Meet Spencer!  This cutie pie was surrender to the Humane Society in Lowell a few weeks ago as his current family did not have the time to spend with him.  The Humane Society contact us to see if we could help Spencer as he was extremely stressed out in the shelter environment.   Spencer  is a 1.5 year old male Boxer that is just gorgeous!  He is very tall and full of energy.  Spencer is a typical young energetic Boxer that does not know how to greet people properly.   He has no manners whatsoever.  He jumps and nips as though everyone he comes into contact with is a play toy.  His original home never worked with spencer on proper greetings.  When you try to pet Spencer, he believes you are engaging in play!  So his foster home will need to work with him on what is an acceptable greeting, what is play and what is not.    Spencer does get along with other dogs, but is unsure how to first greet them, so he can come off as being very pushy and rude.   He knows some basic commands, but has absolutely no patience. He knows: sit, down, paw, other paw.  He sits for a treat but is not patient at all.  After 3 seconds, he will paw you for the treat.  If you do not give it to him, he uses both “paws” before he jumps on you ( lack of training)  He will need an active home as he is very high energy.  He will also need a family that is willing to attend obedience classes with him to help him become the well-mannered Boxer Boy we know he can be!   Check back soon as we get to know this handsome boy in his foster home.
