Bentley

August 4, 2012

Bentley is eager to please, very affectionate; despite his size and evident strength he is very submissive around other dogs and very happy to meet new people.   Bentley has a very healthy energy level and is an incredible moosh! His favorite past times are playing fetch and lying across my feet and giving kisses!

Truly a great pet! His attention and devotion to my children is second only to affection towards them!  We are still working on his separation anxiety behavior, but he is coming along and making great progress.  Bentley will be starting obedience school Tuesday night.

Bentley is really starting to settle in nicely.  He is still a bit nervous when  new people approach, he wags a lot but has a small patch of hair that stands up on his back side; not so much growling, but definitely a show of anxiety. I'm asking him to sit and stay when this occurs and he is pretty good for the most part, but we will continue to work with him on this.

He is a very loving dog and very affectionate with people, it's just that initial meet and greet that gets him nervous.  I'm rewarding him with treats when he does sit and stay and playing the name game with treats, so that visitors say his name and there is a sense of familiarity.   He is becoming more familiar with his crate, and in fact enjoys a daily nap in it right around 4 pm. He  is still a little nervous in it with the door closed though, so we are working on that as well.

Bentley is settling in nicely.  He has not had one accident in the house and is doing great!  He is getting three good walks a day and pulls a little on the leash, so I am working with him on leash walking and heel.  He is very timid when meeting new people on approach,  So we are taking it slow when he meets new people,  I am working with him on positive interactions.  He was never socialized, so he's learning how to properly meet people and getting big rewards and praises for doing so.

Bentley had a play date for an hour today.  He plays great, shares and showed no aggressive behavior at all.    He does bark when someone walks by the home, but we are working on " no bark" and  it's going well.  He loves to  follow me  from room to room so I've started on the " stay" command and  he whines for a few seconds but behaves.   When I leave the house he is not fond of the crate,  so  we will be working with him on crate training and postive interactions with that as well.

He has not shown any destructive behavior so far, he scratches at  the bathroom door when I shower, but has started to calm down and just lay outside door.   When  the kids get home from school he wags like crazy and hops in place,  then he goes right to the back door to play out back with them.

We play fetch and he loves it! Working a great deal on " release " and it's going well.

He did dig a bit in the yard today, but stopped right away when told to stop.

He's doing great with hand commands too! Every voice command has a hand  gesture with it. He will now sit and stay on hand commands only.   Bentley will make an incredible family member! He's Smart, obedient, eager to please and very loving!

Meet Bentley!  Bentley is a 7 month old male that is coming into rescue as his current family does not have the time to spend with him.  He  is a very mellow and sweet  boy, but has developed a few behaviors that will need to be worked on in his new home.   Bentley knows a few commands, sit, paw, down, but not with consistency. Bentley has had no real structure or training, so he will need a strong leader to help him come out of his shell and to work with him on his manners.  He is a bit shy at first and will need someone to work with him on his confidence level.  He will go in the crate, but he will also eliminate in the crate, so he needs work on "positive crate" training and house breaking.  When Bentley gets nervous he will pee in the house.   He is currently showing signs of being protective, but we believe he is taking cues from the resident dog in the home who seems to be the alpha in the house.

Basic obedience classes are a must for Bentley and a family that is willing to work with him on positive training methods to help him gain some confidence back and to teach him the proper manners that he will need as a young boxer boy.  Bentley currently lives with older Children 15+, so we will be looking to place him in a home with older children or no children.  He has not been well socialized with adults, children or other dogs; only the resident dog he currently lives with.  Introduction with him need to be slow until he can figure out how to properly interact with dogs. please check back soon for updates as we secure a foster home for this handsome boy!

Bentley is beyond a prize. - He loves his walks and is doing very well on his leash, he does not pull away or try to run ahead.  His one favorite trick is to at least once every walk throw his body into a spin like a wild horse. As soon as he completes this trick of his he immediately sits and wags his little tail like crazy looking for praise!  He is the most affectionate dog I've ever had. He is a constant companion, sitting by your feet or just enjoying rides in the car. He is in his third week of school and is doing very well with all of the commands and training.   He most enjoys his walks or his nightly training sessions that include his favorite snack " duck " Bentley is a specimen of physical fitness, he is a tall well muscled boy with no fat on him at all.   This puppy is ever eager to please and to play, he does well with dogs of every breed and is very gentle with children. He greets visitors at the door with a wagging tail and then likes to go right to sit and giving paw even when he's not asked too. He is a real show off about his smarts. This puppy loves to cuddle and snores like a chain saw!   By the end of the day he goes to the stairs and wags his tail and gives a couple of playful barks, it's his way of saying goodnight. He charges up the stairs and takes his place at the side of the children's beds and snores away!

Bentley has adjusted great! He is by far the sweetest and most affectionate dog I've had. He is very aware of his size and strength and really approaches every situation with a gentle soul.

Bentley loves running in the fenced yard, loves play dates and really enjoys other dogs. He is very social, only when on walks with the kids present is he the least bit guarded towards others. It's a protective and loyalty trait we are working on.   He loves to cuddle on our feet and is doing very well with commands. House " accidents" have been very rare! On maybe 3 or 4 occasions has he wet the floor and those were when he was excitedly waiting for the kids to come in the house from being off at play dates! Not a bad thing at all! Again it speaks to his loyalty and affection!  He eats well and drinks well, shares well and snores like a Train!  He is very loving and eager to please.
