Meet Rocky!  Rocky’s story is very sad for a two year old boy.  Rocky is coming into the program from his fourth owner.  His current owner was not expecting to get another dog as they currently have two and their daughter brought him home one day.  He does not get along with their resident male lab, so it is causing a little bit of tension in the home.  Rocky gets along great with their resident female Boxer and he appears to be a great dog that just needs the right owner to work with him.  He will need a strong leader that will take the time to work with him, train him and give him the proper exercise, limitation and boundaries a Boxer needs.  We do not know much of his past, but are told he is showing   signs of “protectiveness” in his current home when strangers come to the house, so that will need to be worked on in his new home, with proper boundaries and introductions.  Rocky also has a very high prey drive, so we will not be placing him in a home with little animals or cats. We know he has lived with a 16 year old child in one of his home, so older children would be fine with Rocky.  Please check back soon as we secure a foster home for this handsome boy.

What can we say about Rocky? Not too much has changed since last month except that he has bonded more with Moxie. It's entertaining to watch them wrestle and then crash out for naps together immediately after. For a strong boy he is surprisingly gentle. When he's not protecting the house he likes to cuddle in your lap.

Rocky has become more comfortable having Moxie as part of our home. He definitely enjoys play time and even nap time with her. As long as he has some one on one affection from us, he's happy. He is still protective of our home, but is better with our immediate neighbors. He may bark at them when they initially come out in the yard, but then he relaxes and just watches them work in the yard. In addition to the front window, he likes to lie on the back deck and watch for any critters that may go by in the wooded area beyond the fence, it can occupy him for a long time. Since Moxie isn't as socialized as Rocky he has had a set back on our walks and isn't as friendly and open to meeting other dogs and people as he used to be. Because of this, we will start doing individual walks vs just all of us together. Rocky's forever home will need to have a strong leader, experienced with the breed to keep his stubborn tendencies under control. Everyone that meets him says how handsome and smart he is. Rocky is a special boy just waiting for the right forever home!

Rocky is still adjusting to the new addition. He likes having a playmate - they wrestle, play chase, nap and protect the yard and house together. He doesn't always like to share our attention and he still wants the alpha role.  His stubborn side has come out a little more during the transition; this may be because Moxie is so similar to him. He may do better sharing his home and people with a dog that was more submissive. He would also be ok as the only dog if he had lots of attention, walks and play time. Some words that come to mind to describe Rocky would be: handsome, brave, loving, strong, stubborn, gentle and confident.

Rocky has come a long way since he first arrived in February. He does much better walking and running on leash, sometimes I barely know he is there walking so nicely next to me. Trying a Halti head harness made a big difference. He responds well to all basic commands, but still room for some improvement. He loves his walks, sitting in the window or the back of the truck and playing with his toys. While he likes exercise and play time he is also really good at napping and relaxing. On a recent rainy day I enjoyed a lazy day of reading in bed and he curled up at the foot of the bed with me all day. Rocky likes most people but is still protective at the house, mostly with mailman, ups and other uniformed humans. He likes all other dogs so far and

now has a playmate with our new foster (female boxer) who he can run and play with everyday. They are working out their boundaries as she just arrived a few days ago, but so far I think he will enjoy the company.

We started a new running program and took Rocky along, he does very well running on leash. He seems to enjoy it and it improves his walking manners after. We had overnight guests who dog sat for a day when we were gone and Rocky made fast friends with them. The more comfortable he becomes the more the clown in him comes out. He makes us laugh everyday and has great expressions.

In the past week Rocky has met several new dogs and immediately play bowed with them. The first time was on leash and the other two he was in the front yard on a tethered lead. When in the front yard he also did better with people that passed by. He seemed more like he wanted to play vs. protect like when he is in the back yard or the house.  He has been playing with the tennis ball and rope toy a lot and likes to run in the back yard - he's fast! Rocky is a typical boxer clown, but also likes to take naps and will sit and relax when we have our down time

We discovered some new things about Rocky this week. He seems afraid of nail clippers, trash barrels rolling down the street on windy days or the mailman with treats.  I'm sure these are things he just needs to get use too.   He can have access to the house when we are not at home without getting into any trouble. He likes to play with tennis balls and is good at giving it up so you can play too. Rocky does well with all the basic commands in the house free of distractions, but outside in the yard or on walks he is still very curious and distracted. He is very protective of his territory. We met a large Golden Retriever on a recent walk, Rocky wanted to play box, but the other dog wasn't in the mood.  We will continue to work with Rocky outside in the environment to get him use to different things.  Check back soon for more updates on this handsome boy!
