NOTE:

The average time it takes to process an adoption application is 2-3 weeks which includes screening by our volunteers, a phone interview, reference checks and a home visit. If you have previously fostered a dog for The Boxer Rescue, you do not need to fill out the entire application below, but we would like you to fill out an update. Please email adoption@theboxerrescue.org to obtain a form. Applications MUST be 21 years of age or older. Anyone that is filling out an application who is living with their parents will need parental permission. The Boxer Rescue operates in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.

Although The Boxer Rescue understands that many dog owners use underground/electronic fences for their dogs, we do not consider this containment method to be a physical fence or proper containment for a dog. We feel that underground/electronic fences can be detrimental to our dogs for many reasons. Therefore, we do not allow our adopters to use electronic devices of any kind on our dogs.

One of our reasons for this policy is because the Boxer breed along with other breeds can have a high tolerance to pain. So a dog with a high prey drive could easily break through the electronic barrier to get to their intended stimuli or source. Also, some have been known to run through barriers when frightened by something in the environment such as fireworks or thunder storms. Then, in an effort to get back into the yard, knowing it will receive pain (shock) on entry, the dog will not re-enter the yard. In addition, even when your dog is confined within certain boundaries by an underground/electronic barrier, they are still in immediate danger of other animals or people that can freely enter the property such as other dogs roaming free, wild animals such as coyotes, fisher cats, skunks, etc. and humans with harmful intentions.

Underground or electronic barriers can also have negative effects on dogs. Dogs can easily develop a fear or aggression towards what they believe is the source of the pain or “shock”. When they try to get to the stimulus and they are “shocked”, this can cause “pain by association”. For example, if the dog is out in the yard and Mr. Smith walks his dog in front of the property and the dog happily runs over to say hello and is suddenly shock by the fence, the dog could easily associate that negative pain (the shock) to the person or dog he was trying to say hello to. Thus, the next time Mr. Smith and his dog walk by your property, the dog could easily run over and bark and lunge and possibly break through the underground/electronic fence to get to Mr. Smith and his dog. Other ramifications are that the dog could become fearful of people and other dogs. The pain association can be to anything, including cars that drive by, a child riding a bike in front of the home, and even the mailman. This happens more often than most people think and causes behavioral issues in dogs. Many homes are not even aware of these negative consequences. For all of the above reasons, we do not adopt our dogs into homes where underground fencing/electronic fencing is used as a method of containment.

Electronic Collars - In addition to causing psychological issues and/or behavioral issues, dogs wearing electronic collars can suffer physical pain and injury. Types of injuries can range from burns to cardiac fibrillation, stress, severe anxiety and displaced aggression. Each dog varies in temperament and pain threshold. A shock that seems low to one dog may be severe to another. The anxiety and confusion caused by repeated shocks can also lead to changes in the heart rate or gastrointestinal disorders. Electronic collars can malfunction causing non-stop shocks, burning or delivering no shocks at all.

Electronic collars often deliver painful punishment and negative reinforcement which can cause dogs to live in fear of being shocked for normal behaviors. We at The Boxer Rescue feel that your relationship with your dog should be based on kindness and trust. We only promote positive training methods in which dogs are rewarded for what they do correctly and if there are behaviors that you would like to see changed, we teach our dogs an alternate behavior. Positive reinforcement creates a bond and trust that we believe owners should have with their dog. It is a kinder and more effective way of training in our opinion.

So, when choosing your training methods/devices for your dog we ask you to please ask yourself, do you really want your dog to do something for you because they fear you? Or would you rather your dog trust you and want to be with you because you’ve trained him or her using positive reinforcement methods?
